Arfiya Eri‘s election to the National Diet of Japan was a powerful step towards diversity, representation, and inclusion in Japanese politics – in 2023 Time Magazine named her as one of the top 100 emerging global leaders shaping the future and defining the next generation.
As the youngest woman in Japanese parliament representing an urban constituency, and as a Japanese woman of Uyghur and Uzbek heritage with academic specialisation in modern Uyghur identities, Eri brings a distinct voice to the political landscape and a unique perspective on human rights, cyber-enabled campaigns and disinformation, privacy & surveillance technology.
This session discussed Eri’s experience, the importance of diversity, representation and inclusion in democracies and how we might build societal resilience against challenges like foreign interference and hybrid threat activity.
Speakers in this session included: Arfiya Eri, Liberal Democratic Party Member of Japan's House of Representatives and Danielle Cave, Director of Executive, Strategy and Research at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.
